Are violin bass guitars good?

12th October

I have had an ibanez soundgear bass for about 6 months and i want to get a more advanced and better sounding bass. I thought the hofner violin bass would be good. Is it? Are violin basses in general good?

here is the one i want:

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Hofner-Icon-Series-Vintage-Violin-Bass-511788-i1176222.gc

The only violin bass i know is made by Hofner which Paul McCartney still owns.

The bass has a dry punchy sound. I used to have one at the store and it wasn’t cheap either. The owneer had it for 30 years LOL. The one you are referring to is a good bass no doubt.

The action is beautiful and very easy to play.

which is better, the make of Cort guitars or make of Vintage guitars?

8th October

i want to know which one is better… cause i’m gonna buy a new bass guitar…

both are generic el-cheapo brands produced as the lowest of the lowest quality by factories producing low-spec instruments for others.

Avoid them.

Vintage Bass Guitar Shops?

8th October

I’m looking for a vintage (or something made at least before 1995) Fender Precision Bass. I’ve looked on eBay, but that stuff is way too expensive and there’s no way to know if it’s quality or original. Does anybody know of a great vintage shop online or around the Northwest area where I can find a used vintage bass for around $1000 or less?

10 points if you help me out! I’d really like to find a great vintage shop.

Also, please don’t say Guitar Center, eBay, craigslist or any of that stuff.

Thanks!

Consider House of Guitars in Rochester, New York. I haven’t been there in a few years, but they had the biggest selection of new and used guitars I’d ever seen last time I went with our son. The building is old and funky, but most of the staff consists of professional musicians who know their, ah, stuff.

They’ve got an entry in Wikipedia, a MySpace page, and a website at http://www.houseofguitars.com/

Question about bass guitars?

2nd October

Okay, I’m looking to buy my first bass guitar soon. I have no real musical experience before, but I’m looking to get into music and the bass has always interested me.
I was searching for a bass and I came across one that I immediately loved the look of:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Hofner-Icon-Series-Lefty-Vintage-Violin-Bass?sku=515042&src=3SOSWXXA
(yes, I play left handed)
My question is this…since this is a semi hollow bass, would it sound much different from a solid one? Will I be unable to play anything ska or punk like with it simply because of how it’s made?
I just need to know if I’ll be limiting my playing range right off the bat, because I really would love that bass.
And if anyone has any suggestions for a better starting bass, feel free to share them.
Thanks.

Here’s the deal:
The sound will be exceptionally different to a trained ear. If you want to do ska or punk, a Fender would probably have the best, most traditional sound, but you can play any style on just about any bass. This hollow, violin base would be for something more folksy or earthy sounding… but you can play anything in it. You won’t limit any playing range, you can play all the notes in any style on this, but they will sound with some more reverb, thanks to the body.
Slaps will be much more resonant, normal plucks not so much. Go to a store like guitar center and see if they have it in a respect you can try them out.
